Onibus 174

Winner of the Charles E. Guggenheim
Emerging Artist Award
Full Frame Documentary Festival, 2003

Reviewed by Allan Maurer

Onibus 174, directed by Jose Padilha, rails against the system that led a young Brazilian man to step aboard a bus in Rio de Janeiro, June 14, 2000 and terrorize the passengers for four and half hours — all televised. The repetitious macho posturing of the hostage-taker gets tiresome, but gains intensity as it slowly lets us see him as a human being crazed by the way his society marginalized his existence.
