Flag Wars

Winner of the Center for Documentary Studies Filmmaker Award
Full Frame Documentary Festival, 2003

Reviewed by Allan Maurer

Flag Wars, by Linda Goode Bryant and Laura Poitras, documents the battle between gentrifying gays who move into a Columbus, Ohio neighborhood formerly mostly black. "Flag Wars" is moving in its portrayal of grass roots efforts to fight bureaucratic housing code regulations that didn't make real world sense and the clash between two minorities, blacks and gays. But it lacks the intimate drama of "Speedo," "Stevie," "Divining Mom," and "Bright Leaves," which also screened at Full Frame.
