McElwee Honored with First "Power of Image" Award
The Light Factory
Charlotte, NC
[Listen to Ross talk
about his family ties to tobacco in an NPR
interview.]

The Light
Factory will award the Power of Image honor yearly
to a photographer or filmmaker with a distinguished body of work
who has made outstanding artistic contributions to his or her medium.
McElwee was selected
for his command of the first-person narrative documentary style.
He began making autobiographical
films in the 1980s, often featuring real people from his own life.
His works include Sherman’s March, Time Indefinite, Six O’Clock
News, and his latest musing on tobacco, the award-winning
Bright Leaves.
“His films have secured
a niche in the international film community, a vast accomplishment
in the big-budget film world where special effects and slick editing
are prioritized above good storytelling,” said Wendy Fishman,
Director of Film Programming for The Light Factory.
